The Painting Assignment for "A Caring Team"
After my initial meeting and tour, I left the Cancer Services office of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with necessary information and many feelings/emotions which helped me during the painting process.
The Information/Message on the Cancer Services Website

At Cancer Services, Inc. we are here to help you regain a sense of control in your life. We believe the best first step is to surround yourself with caring, knowledgeable individuals who understand what you are experiencing. We will introduce you to experts who can help you translate your tangle of emotions into a singular action plan for healing. It's what we do every day.
My Feelings/Emotions
I left the office feeling that there were many loving individuals who would genuinely care about your mental and physical well-being. A large number of volunteers and caring staff are in position, eager and ready to help you through your journey in a spirit of celebration, love and education. I left that day, knowing that if I needed a team to help me after being diagnosed with cancer, that I would have many hands and hearts supporting me. I would, in fact, feel surrounded by “A Caring Team”.
Symbols within the Painting
I’ve included many symbols, even many of the different colored ribbons representing the different forms of cancer. The woman is literally surrounded by the wing of a bluebird – a symbol for happiness. Flowers and decorated ribbons further enhance the happiness of the bluebird. The home represents the caring place provided by Cancer Services – a place for sharing, education, laughter and tears – a place where questions and answers can be discussed openly. The Cancer Services logo, a constant reminder that the first step is to surround yourself with caring, knowledgeable individuals who understand what you are experiencing. The sun is represented as a positive source of heat, light and healing. The outstretched arms and hands represent the many thousands of volunteers and individuals offering time, money and support. The vine, moving from the top of the page, around the woman and over the bird, is a symbol indicating that we are all connected. The bracelet, is a symbol and reminder that each of us have many gifts to share. The heart, is a symbol indicating that feelings, emotions, joys, tears, education, stories are openly shared - - - people open their hearts to each other. |
